Corner Brook Dance Hub
Studio Policies for Students and Families
-
Corner Brook Dance Hub is dedicated to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants. We believe in fostering a community where everyone feels supported in their dance journey. By adhering to these guidelines, we can ensure that Corner Brook Dance Hub remains a space where creativity flourishes and everyone feels at home. Any actions that violate the below guidelines and/or compromises the safety, well-being, or enjoyment of others will be documented and, at the discretion of CBDH may result in suspension or removal from classes without a refund
For Dancers of All Ages:
Respect and Kindness
Treat your instructors, assistants, fellow dancers, and yourself with respect and kindness in language and action.
Follow the studio guidelines your instructor shares in class. These are designed for learning and safety – ie. taking turns, ‘hands to yourself’, etc.
Participate in setting and following class agreements. Each class will have a unique set of rules and expectations generated collaboratively and suited to the class environment.
Preparedness
Arrive on time, prepared with all necessary items including dancewear, footwear, and water bottle.
Dancers will always be allowed to take water and washroom breaks when they need to, but please use the washroom before class!
If you miss more than 3 classes per semester, particularly leading up to a performance, take action to catch up – ask a classmate to go over what you missed, organize a private lesson with the instructor, and/or practice at home.
Avoid
Do not bring food, drinks (other than water), or chewing gum into the studio.
Cell phones and other electronic devices (tablets, cameras, video games) are not permitted in class (exceptions will be made for workers who are on-call, adaptive technology, etc).
Sitting Out
Notify your instructor if you are injured or unwell and need to sit out for some or all of the class. For injuries or non-contagious illnesses that prevent active participation, dancers should attend class to observe, support their classmates, and work on the specific components that they can.
Please stay home if you have a contagious illness (and notify the office if possible).
Grown-ups will be notified by the instructor when young dancers sit out during portions of the class
For Grown-ups / Dance Families:
Be Supportive
Trust the expertise and guidance of the instructors. Ask questions about class activities, participation, and progression
Timeliness and Communication
Ensure you/your dancer is dropped off approximately 5 minutes before class and picked up on time.
Direct any questions about classes, schedule, and billing to office staff.
Make payments on-time and notify office staff immediately of any changes or challenges.
Conduct and Respect
Treat instructors, assistants, and dancers with respect and kindness in language and action – we are all part of developing a culture of belonging.
Refrain from any actions or behaviours, whether verbal, written, or physical, that may be perceived as intimidating, threatening, or hostile.
Respect work/life balance and privacy of instructors – communicate through official CBDH channels and not private social media, phone, or home addresses.
-
Most important correspondence from Corner Brook Dance Hub will happen by email. Please make sure to read emails to make sure you have all the relevant information!
The email address connect@cornerbrookdancehub.com will be used for most communications. Parents/Guardians should use this address to contact our team. This email will be checked regularly by office staff and directed to the appropriate person for response.
During registration we will ask for a cell phone number. During emergency and/or last-minute closures (ie. power outage, snowstorms) we may send an SMS text message in addition to emailing to better ensure the message is received. This is optional.

Dance clothing can be inspiring and/or frustrating for dancers, but it is always functional! Looking and feeling the part help dancers do their best dancing. Focus on clothing that does not restrict movement, that shows the lines of the body, and does not need a lot of changing or adjusting during class. Solid colours are preferred. Also consider that body and room temperatures change during class – dress for the season and bring layers when appropriate.
Unless otherwise specified by your instructor, the dress code for all classes is:
Hair secured out of the face (ponytail, bun, braid for long hair; headband, or clips for shorter hair)
Choice or combination of:
Bodysuit and dance tights
Fitted leggings / shorts / yoga pants (for ballet, dancewear should be fitted enough that hips, knees, and ankles are not covered by baggy fabrics)
Fitted long or short sleeve t-shirt, or tank top
Optional
Knee pads
Short ballet skirt
Please Avoid
All Jewellery
Spaghetti strap and crop tops (to avoid ‘picking’ and adjusting which interrupts dancing)
Tutus and costumes
Footwear:
Dance Adventures – bare feet or ballet shoes (pink or black)
Dance Mix – bare feet, ballet shoes, or jazz shoes (any colour)
Ballet – leather or canvas ballet slippers (pink or black)
Jazz-Pop – Ballet slippers or Jazz shoes (black preferred)
Tap – ‘Mary Jane’ or Jazz-style Tap shoes (black preferred)
Modern/Contemporary – Bare feet (socks or ½ sole ‘dance paws’ may be worn intermittently in the class)
Ballroom – ballet, jazz, or character shoes, bare feet, or clean indoor sneakers with non-marking soles
Parent and Tot – bare feet (preferred); ballet or jazz shoes
Where to find dancewear and footwear:
Instructors and Staff can all advise on different clothing and footwear options.
CBDH has a selection of high-quality shoes and dancewear for sale and can order in sizes and styles that we don’t have in-stock.
CBDH also maintains a “need some/got some” footwear and dancewear exchange. A selection of pre-loved items are available in the lobby. Trade in your old (cleaned and useable) dance shoes / clothes for an available item. Or purchase for $5-$15 (depending on style and condition of the item).
Dancewear and shoes can sometimes be found locally at Walmart and Joe Fresh.

Corner Brook Dance Hub offers group dance classes in a variety of styles that run from October to June, as well as shorter class series that run during regular intervals throughout the year. Classes take place at the Dance Hub at 31 Wellington Street in one of our two studio spaces. Participants should arrive 5-10 minutes before their class time and be picked up no later than 5 minutes after class end time. Except for specially arranged circumstances, we cannot guarantee supervision for young students outside of these times.
There are washrooms / places to change for class. An instructor, and sometimes a teaching assistant will be there as well as office staff periodically during class hours.
Parents, Partners and Friends are always curious about dance classes! We invite them to join us for our observation days each semester and regularly ask the instructor about their classes and students’ progress. But, based on years of experience, we are not set up for observation of weekly group classes as it distracts dancers and keeps them in performing mode instead of the vital learning and exploring mode.

The posted schedule is subject to change due to class registration numbers, and instructor availability. We reserve the right to cancel or change classes at any time and will refund or re-allocate amounts owing, pro-rated to the number of classes in the semester.
Extenuating factors – Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather, public health crisis, natural disaster, utility outages, and similar events without refunds or make-up classes. Should consecutive classes be missed due to these outside circumstances, it is at the instructor’s discretion if a make-up class will be offered. Generally, if schools are closed for weather related causes, CBDH will be closed as well. Participants will be notified by email (and SMS text message where applicable) if there is any change in the class schedule.
Unavailability – Classes may be cancelled due to instructor illness or unavailability. While every attempt will be made to find a substitute instructor, when this is not possible, a make-up class will be offered and the updated schedule will be sent via email.

Our annual recital will take place at the Arts and Culture Centre the week of June 9-14, 2025 with rehearsals and shows happening during that time for participants in full-year classes. Tickets for the show will go on sale in 2025 and full recital details will be shared with families then.
Costumes are required for recitals. Every effort is made to choose costumes that are comprised of items dancers already own or can borrow, that can be rented, or that can be purchased but re-used as regular clothing items. We will work over the years to make costumes as accessible as possible. Anyone interested in volunteering for costume committee – sourcing, sewing, or alterations, should reach out to let us know.
There will occasionally be other performance opportunities for students throughout the year (Christmas parades, community events, etc) and details for any of these will be shared in advance.

Most classes at Corner Brook Dance Hub are organized by age and not ability. This allows class content to align with everyone’s developmental stages, ensuring that our teaching methods and content are age-appropriate and engaging. This approach fosters a supportive environment where students can progress together, building confidence, social connections, and teamwork skills. Our instructors are experienced in these multi-level settings and still recognize individual abilities, providing opportunities for growth and progression for each participant.
Most instructors at Corner Brook Dance Hub are independent contractors who are trusted to design and teach their own curricula, in their own style, because of the education and experience they have. However, these instructors are vetted and supported by CBDH and have made commitments to our organizational policies.
Instructors all have up-to-date vulnerable sector checks on file
Instructors all have first aid training and speciated dance training
Instructors commit to engaging in ongoing professional learning themselves
Instructors work with students to establish and communicate best practices for safety, consent, group learning
If you have a question about a particular instructor’s style or approach, just ask!
Occasionally classes will be taught by our Apprentice Dance Instructors. These instructors are working on specialized dance training and leadership skills and are available to substitute for classes and act as guest instructors to share their unique skills.
In addition, classes are supported by Teaching Assistants from our Dance Leaders program. These assistants support instructors with taking attendance, demonstrating exercises, classroom management, multi-level learning, and occasionally leading portions of the class. Entrance to the Dance Leaders program is by application only and participants should have previous dance experience.
